Walking in Big Tree Country

From gentle strolls along riverside paths to lofty day treks on magnificent Munros...

Big Tree Countrycan offer every conceivable type of walking with extensive and unique walking networks around the towns and villages of Pitlochry, Dunkeld, Blairgowrie, Crieff and Comrie to suit all ages and abilities.

Why not take a walk through Black Spout Wood, in Pitlochry - an oak wood alive with red squirrels and roe deer - along the way you'll pass a cascading waterfall, a ruined castle and call into Scotland's smallest distillery at Edradour for a wee 'dram'.

Many routes involve interesting diversions, such as Roman camps, medieval castles, whisky distilleries and Victorian follies - reminders of the area's important history. And with many walks based around picturesque towns and villages, it's easy to find a tearoom or Inn for refreshments and a well-earned rest.

Lovers of long distance routes will enjoy the 64-mile Cateran Trail which forms a circuit in east Perthshire starting and finishing in Blairgowrie, or spend 7 days walking in notorious Rob Roy MacGregor's footsteps on the Rob Roy Way which runs 77 miles from Drymen to the popular holiday town of Pitlochry.

If you prefer hill and mountain walking then the mountains here form part of the Southern Highlands, which are generally more rounded and less rocky than their counterparts further north. They provide both an attractive venue for those on short breaks and also an excellent testing ground for less experienced hillwalkers.

Look out for businesses displaying the VisitScotland Walkers and Cyclists Welcome logos, as they have specific facilities for walkers and cyclists.
